and whoa, does the Michael Keaton version have flaws.
I loved it when it came out, championed it more accurately. But seeing it after the Christian Bale version, several things jump out.
First, the Danny Elfman score seems very heavy-handed at times, intruding on the film.
Secondly, that line "I just want to know, if we are going to try and love each other" line from Vicky Vale seemed bad in 89; in 05, it is truly repugnant.
Next, that batsuit. It looks good as long as it is a long shot, and MK isn't moving. The cowl is more like a bat helmet, huge and not letting him move well.
And a lot of the effects look w a a a a y dated. Some go as far as to be bad. (the spotlights at the end, Batman turning and walking in from the balcony at the beginning.)
In the positive side of things, Jack Nicholson's performance still holds up, the comedy is still there.
It was cool to see the two movies and compare them. I think the New Beverly needs a new projector, though. There were some serious focus issues.

Re: Just caught a Batman double feature at the New Beverly
Fri, November 18, 2005 - 2:44 AMI have been a Tim Burton Batman hater after the frist 20 minutes of that abomination of screen staining treacle. Sometimes I used to get really depressed that we live in a mediocre world full of mediocre people who will accept almost anything poured in to there heads.
So I was glad to see the freanchise re-written and done much better, though the hokey chase scene in the middle and the action scene at the end were TOO much.
The biggest flaw in Burton's is Keation. WTF? I hated that even before I saw the movie. Nicolson was over the top and it also seemed to introduce this thing where we get a close-up of the logo in the opening and that is BORRING.
I am glad people are beginning to see the light and can tell the shoeshine from the shineola -

Re: Just caught a Batman double feature at the New Beverly
Mon, November 21, 2005 - 11:57 PMWell, I actually liked Keaton. I thought that he played Bruce Wayne well. He exceptionally portrayed a man so consumed by his parent's death that he is slightly demented and dresses up as a bat and fights crime. I have always thought that the key to the role is playing Bruce Wayne. Batman is easy: drop your voice an octave, wear the suit. Being a bit maniacle is the key to Bruce Wayne, and until Bale, Keaton did that best.
Nicholson over the top? Well, that IS the Joker.
But I like the Christian Bale version much better. Better Bat suit design. Kept to the origins more. And let's face it, adding three Academy Award winners and several nominees to any movie will make it better.
